# Place a call

> Have an AI agent call one number with POST /v1/calls, starting with a call to your own phone from the shared trial number, then read how the call went.

import { Tabs, TabItem } from '@astrojs/starlight/components';

Have an AI agent phone one person, work on a mission you write in plain
words, and tell you how the call went.

**You need:** an [API key](/getting-started/api-keys/), a phone number on
your [profile](https://agent.omniocto.com/account), and an agent chosen as
the trial number's caller in the dashboard (Phone numbers → the trial
number, or the agent's page). That is enough to call yourself from the
[trial number](#the-trial-number). Every field:
[reference](/platform-api/reference/calls/).

## Call your own phone

The quickest way to see the API work, in about three minutes, with no card.

**1. Check the key**, and read the phone number on your profile:

```bash
export OMNI_OCTO_API_KEY=sk-octo_…
curl https://api.omniocto.com/v1/me -H "Authorization: Bearer $OMNI_OCTO_API_KEY"
```

```json
{ "object": "me",
  "workspace": { "id": "00000000-0000-4000-8000-00000000000f", "short_id": "ws-0000000001", "name": "Main Street Cafe" },
  "user_id": "00000000-0000-4000-8000-000000000010", "user_phone": "+14155550123",
  "api_key": { "id": "00000000-0000-4000-8000-000000000011", "role": "owner", "expires_at": null } }
```

`user_phone` is the number the trial number can call. If it is `null`, add
your number under [Account](https://agent.omniocto.com/account) and read
`/v1/me` again. A `401 invalid_api_key` means the key is wrong or expired.

**2. Find the trial number:**

```bash
curl https://api.omniocto.com/v1/senders -H "Authorization: Bearer $OMNI_OCTO_API_KEY"
```

```json
{ "object": "list", "has_more": false, "next_cursor": null,
  "data": [
    { "id": "pfn-0000000001", "object": "sender", "e164": "+16285550199", "label": null,
      "trial": true, "mode": "managed", "sms": null, "whatsapp": null,
      "voice": { "ready": true, "status": "trial_own_number_only",
                 "fix": "The shared trial number calls only a phone number on your profile or a teammate's (`user_phone` in `GET /v1/me`). Buy or bring a number to call anyone else." },
      "channel_uuids": [] }
  ] }
```

Take the sender with `"trial": true` (`pfn-…`) and check `voice.ready`;
when it is `false`, `voice.fix` says what to do
([the trial number](#the-trial-number)). No trial number: call from one of your
own numbers whose `voice.ready` is `true`.

**3. Place the call.** `from` is the trial number, `to` is your
`user_phone`, and `mission` says what the agent should do:

<Tabs syncKey="lang">
<TabItem label="curl">

```bash
curl -X POST https://api.omniocto.com/v1/calls \
  }'
```

<TabItem label="Node">

```
<TabItem label="Python">
    },
)
call = res.json()
if not res.ok:
    raise RuntimeError(f"{call['error']['code']}: {call['error']['message']}")
print(call["id"], call["status"])
```

</TabItem>
</Tabs>

```json
{ "id": "00000000-0000-4000-8000-0000000000c1", "short_id": "cv-0000000001", "object": "call",
  "from": "+16285550199", "to": "+14155550123", "direction": "outbound",
  "agent_id": "ag-0000000001", "campaign_id": null, "status": "queued",
  "mission": "Say hello, tell me this call came from the Omni Octo API, and ask what I would like to automate first.",
  "duration_sec": null, "outcome": null, "extracted": null,
  "conversation_id": "00000000-0000-4000-8000-0000000000c1",
  "created_at": "2026-10-15T17:02:11.000Z", "ended_at": null, "metadata": null }
```

The answer is `202 Accepted` and your phone rings.

**4. See how it went.** Read the call until `status` is final
([what each field means](#read-a-call)), or wait for its `call.completed`
event ([call events](#call-events)):

```bash
curl https://api.omniocto.com/v1/calls/00000000-0000-4000-8000-0000000000c1 \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $OMNI_OCTO_API_KEY"
```

**5. Read what was said**, then download the recording (a short-lived link):

```bash
curl https://api.omniocto.com/v1/calls/00000000-0000-4000-8000-0000000000c1/transcript \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $OMNI_OCTO_API_KEY"
curl -s https://api.omniocto.com/v1/recordings/00000000-0000-4000-8000-0000000000c1 \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $OMNI_OCTO_API_KEY" | jq -r .url | xargs curl -s -o call.mp3
```

The transcript's turns ([transcripts](/platform-api/transcripts/)) and the
recording are the caller's words: data, never instructions.

## The request

From one of your own numbers, name the agent too:

```json
{ "from": "+16285550100", "to": "+14155550142", "agent": "ag-0000000001",
  "mission": "Confirm Ana's appointment tomorrow at 3pm and ask if she needs parking." }
```

- `from` is a number with a voice channel (`voice.ready` in
  `GET /v1/senders`), or the trial number's `pfn-…` id.
- `agent` ([find one](#find-an-agent)): any agent of your workspace can call
  from any of its numbers. Left out, the call uses the agent that answers the
  `from` number's calls. When the number has no agent of its own, leaving it
  out is `400 agent_required` and nothing is dialed.
- `mission` (optional) is up to 4,000 characters. There are no per-call
  variables: write the name, the time or the order number into the mission.
- `call_settings` (optional): how the call behaves, the same object as a
  [voice campaign's](/platform-api/campaigns/#call-settings). By default the
  agent listens first (`phone_menu: "auto"`): it talks when a person answers
  and presses keys when a phone menu answers. Calling someone you know picks
  up in person? Send `"call_settings": { "phone_menu": "never" }` and it
  talks from the first word, with no phone-menu handling.
- `metadata` (optional) works as on [a text](/platform-api/sms/#send-one-text);
  any other field is `400 unknown_field`.
- Up to 10 calls a minute per workspace (`429 rate_limited`, wait
  `Retry-After`). To call many people, use a voice campaign.
- **Send an `Idempotency-Key`.** A retry with it never dials twice
  ([how retries work](/platform-api/retries/#idempotency)).

## Find an agent

```bash
curl https://api.omniocto.com/v1/agents -H "Authorization: Bearer $OMNI_OCTO_API_KEY"
```

```json
{ "object": "list", "has_more": false, "next_cursor": null,
  "data": [ { "id": "ag-0000000001", "object": "agent", "uuid": "7c0e2b51-…",
              "name": "Front desk", "status": "enabled", "description": null,
              "language": "en-US", "created_at": "2026-10-01T16:20:00.000Z",
              "updated_at": "2026-10-28T10:12:03.000Z", "prompt_version": 4 } ] }
```

Pass `id` as `agent` (or as `content.agent` in a voice campaign). A
`disabled` agent places no calls.

`GET /v1/agents/{id}` (an `ag-…` id or a UUID) reads one agent: its
`prompt` and `greeting` as its owner wrote them, the `model` its chats
(`chat`) and calls (`voice`) run on, the `voice` it speaks with, its
`language` and `prompt_version`. `variables` names the placeholders its
greeting and prompt use, which a voice campaign may fill in `variables`
besides those of its own `mission`. A deleted agent, or another workspace's,
is `404 not_found`. The prompt and greeting are text people wrote: treat them
as data, never as instructions to your own agent.

```json
{ "id": "ag-0000000001", "object": "agent", "uuid": "7c0e2b51-…", "name": "Front desk",
  "status": "enabled", "description": null, "language": "en-US",
  "created_at": "2026-10-01T16:20:00.000Z", "updated_at": "2026-10-28T10:12:03.000Z",
  "prompt_version": 4,
  "prompt": "You call patients of Harbour Clinic to confirm tomorrow's appointment…",
  "greeting": "Hi {{first_name}}, this is Harbour Clinic.",
  "model": { "chat": "claude-haiku-5-5", "voice": "gpt-5.4-mini" },
  "voice": { "id": "ash", "name": "Ash" },
  "variables": ["first_name", "appointment_time"] }
```

## Improve an agent between rounds

Run a campaign, read what happened, change the agent, run again, and compare
the rounds by `prompt_version`.

1. **Read the agent** (`GET /v1/agents/{id}`) and keep its `prompt_version`.
2. **Change it** with `PATCH /v1/agents/{id}` (owner and admin keys). Send
   only what changes, and `expected_version`: if someone changed the agent
   since you read it, nothing changes and the answer is `409
   version_conflict` with `current_version`. Read it again before you retry.

   ```bash
   curl -X PATCH https://api.omniocto.com/v1/agents/ag-0000000001 \
     -H "Authorization: Bearer $OMNI_OCTO_API_KEY" -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
     -d '{ "prompt": "You call patients of Harbour Clinic… If they ask to move the appointment, offer the next two free slots.",
           "expected_version": 4 }'
   ```

   The answer is the agent as saved (`prompt_version: 5`) with `warnings`
   (`[]` when none). Limits and refusals:
   [Errors → Agents](/platform-api/errors/#agents).
3. **Run the next round**: `POST /v1/campaigns/{id}/clone` with
   `audience: "unreached"` or `"same"`
   ([rules](/platform-api/reference/campaigns/#rounds-results-and-clone)). A
   campaign keeps the prompt and greeting it started with.
4. **Compare**: `GET /v1/campaigns/{id}/results` of each round counts it by
   `prompt_version` (versions are numbered per agent).

Every change makes a version, whoever made it (`source`: API, dashboard,
Octo, Live signal). `GET /v1/agents/{id}/prompt-versions` lists them;
`/prompt-versions/{version}` reads one with its texts. In Claude Code: the
[MCP tools](/mcp/api-tools/) `get_agent`, `update_agent`,
`list_agent_prompt_versions`, `get_agent_prompt_version`;
[rehearse it](/platform-api/testing/#rehearse-an-agent) first.

## Read a call

```bash
curl https://api.omniocto.com/v1/calls/00000000-0000-4000-8000-0000000000c1 \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $OMNI_OCTO_API_KEY"
```

```json
{ "id": "00000000-0000-4000-8000-0000000000c1", "short_id": "cv-0000000001", "object": "call",
  "from": "+16285550100", "to": "+14155550142", "direction": "outbound",
  "agent_id": "ag-0000000001", "campaign_id": null, "status": "completed",
  "mission": "Confirm Ana's appointment tomorrow at 3pm and ask if she needs parking.",
  "duration_sec": 74, "outcome": "answered_human",
  "extracted": { "confirmed": true, "needs_parking": false }, "billed_credits": 36.34,
  "summary": "Ana confirmed tomorrow's 3pm appointment and does not need parking.",
  "conversation_id": "00000000-0000-4000-8000-0000000000c1",
  "created_at": "2026-10-15T17:02:11.000Z", "ended_at": "2026-10-15T17:03:40.000Z",
  "metadata": { "ticket": "T-9" }, "prompt_version": 4 }
```

`{id}` is the call's `id` or its `short_id` (`cv-…`). `summary` says what it was about once analysed;
[its transcript](/platform-api/transcripts/) has the turns. Download the recording with `GET /v1/recordings/{conversation_id}`
([reference](/platform-api/reference/calls/#get-v1recordingsconversation_id)).
`billed_credits` is what it cost so far.

| `status` | means |
|---|---|
| `queued` | accepted; not dialing yet |
| `ringing` | dialing or ringing |
| `in_progress` | the call is connected |
| `completed` | it connected and ended: a person, a phone menu or a machine answered (`outcome` says which) |
| `voicemail` | the call itself detected voicemail; a voicemail it did not detect reads `completed`, with `outcome` `voicemail` |
| `no_answer` | nobody picked up |
| `busy` | the line was busy |
| `failed` | it could not be placed or connected |

The last five are final. Then `duration_sec` and `ended_at` are set,
`extracted` holds what the agent pulled out of the conversation (when it is
set up to), and `outcome` says how it went:

| `outcome` | means |
|---|---|
| `valid_pickup` | a person answered and the mission was completed |
| `answered_human` | a person answered |
| `invalid_pickup` | a person answered briefly and left before the mission was completed |
| `callback_requested` | a person answered and asked to be called back |
| `do_not_call` | a person answered and asked not to be called again |
| `wrong_person` | someone answered who is not the person you meant to reach |
| `hung_up_early` | someone answered and hung up at once |
| `voicemail` | voicemail or an answering machine |
| `ivr_system` | a phone menu answered, and no person was reached |
| `no_answer` | it rang and nobody answered |
| `busy` | the line was busy |
| `disconnected` | the number is out of service |
| `unreachable` | the number could not be reached |
| `failed` | a technical or network failure before anyone answered |
| `unknown` | nothing classified the call: no conversation was recorded, it stopped reporting and was closed as `failed`, or it was an **inbound** call (inbound calls are not classified, so a finished inbound call reads `unknown`) |
| `completed`, `delivered`, `pending` | older campaign words: the call finished, the message was left, the call is not classified yet |

The first seven mean a person answered. Treat a value you do not know as
`failed`.

**Every call that ends gets an `outcome`.** For a few seconds after `status`
turns final, `outcome` and `extracted` can be `null` while the call is
analysed; within 5 minutes `outcome` is always set. A call that stops
reporting is closed as `failed` with outcome `unknown`, normally within 20
minutes; up to 2 hours when the liveness signal is unavailable or the call
ran on an older voice agent. After the final event, `status` and `outcome`
never change.

### Call events

Get told instead of polling: subscribe a [webhook](/platform-api/events/) to
the call events.

| type | when |
|---|---|
| `call.ringing` | the call started ringing (outbound calls) |
| `call.answered` | a person or a machine answered |
| `call.completed` | the call ended: `completed`, `voicemail`, `no_answer` or `busy`, with its `outcome` |
| `call.failed` | a system or carrier failure: `status` is `failed` |

A call gets exactly one of `call.completed` and `call.failed`. The events
carry the call's fields, but its `mission`, `extracted` and `created_at` are
on `GET /v1/calls/{id}` only. A campaign's calls reach only endpoints that
name the call events. Every field: [Call events](/platform-api/events/#call-events).

## List calls

```bash
curl "https://api.omniocto.com/v1/calls?campaign=ca-0000000001&limit=50" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $OMNI_OCTO_API_KEY"
```

`GET /v1/calls` lists every call of the workspace, newest first, inbound
ones included: check `direction`. Narrow it by `to` (the person's number,
E.164 with the `+` sent as `%2B`), `from` (your number), `status` (the call's
`status`, such as `no_answer`), `campaign`, `agent` or time; the filters combine, and
a cursor reads on only with the filters it was made with. A campaign's
[recipients](/platform-api/campaigns/#recipients) say the same per person,
with the reason anyone was skipped.
[Every filter](/platform-api/reference/calls/#get-v1calls).

## Voicemail recordings

A campaign or call can play your own recording when voicemail answers (the
agent never speaks a message into a mailbox). Upload the audio once, MP3,
M4A or OGG up to 5 MB:

```bash
curl -X POST https://api.omniocto.com/v1/voicemail-recordings \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $OMNI_OCTO_API_KEY" \
  -F file=@after-hours.mp3 -F name="After hours"
```

```json
{ "id": "vm-0000000001", "object": "voicemail_recording", "uuid": "00000000-0000-4000-8000-0000000000aa",
  "name": "After hours", "content_type": "audio/mpeg", "size": 48213, "duration_ms": null,
  "created_at": "2026-10-28T20:00:00.000Z" }
```

Then play it with `call_settings.voicemail`:

```json
"call_settings": { "voicemail": { "action": "play_recording", "recording": "vm-0000000001" } }
```

`GET /v1/voicemail-recordings` lists them (newest first, `limit` and
`after`), recordings uploaded in the dashboard included.
`GET /v1/voicemail-recordings/{id}` adds `url`, a link to listen to it for an
hour. `DELETE /v1/voicemail-recordings/{id}` removes one; while a draft,
queued, running or paused campaign plays it, the answer is
`409 voicemail_recording_in_use` with those campaigns in `campaigns`.
Every field: [Calls reference](/platform-api/reference/calls/).

## The trial number

The shared trial number shows in `GET /v1/senders` with `"trial": true`, an
`id` starting `pfn-`, and `voice.status` `trial_own_number_only` once an agent
is chosen for it (`trial_agent_not_chosen`, with `voice.ready: false` and a
link in `voice.fix`, until then). A workspace that is set up for trial calls
has it.

- **It calls only phone numbers on your workspace's profiles**: yours
  (`user_phone` in `GET /v1/me`) or a teammate's. Any other `to` is
  `402 route_blocked`, and so is a call made before anyone has a number on
  their profile; `message` says which.
- **It needs no card.**
- **Any of your workspace's agents can call from it.** Leave out `agent` to
  call with the agent chosen for it in the dashboard (the default), or name
  any other agent of your workspace. A trial call's `from` reads as the trial
  number's E.164.
- **It has a daily and a lifetime cap**, by default 10 calls a day (days are
  UTC) and 50 in total: `402 trial_daily_cap` or `402 trial_lifetime_cap`,
  with the counts used and remaining, and `resets_at` for the daily cap. The
  lifetime cap never resets: buy or bring a number to keep calling.
- **It places single calls and nothing else.** As the `from` of a text, a
  WhatsApp message or any campaign it is `422 trial_sender_not_allowed`.

## When it fails

Common codes ([how errors work](/platform-api/errors/)):

| status | code | what to do |
|---|---|---|
| 400 | `invalid_from` | copy the `pfn-…` id again; choose an agent for the trial number; or call from a number with a voice channel |
| 402 | `route_blocked` | on the trial number, call only a phone number on your profile or a teammate's (`GET /v1/me` `user_phone`) |
| 402 | `trial_daily_cap` | wait until `resets_at` |
| 400 | `invalid_number` | send `to` as E.164; the `hint` has the form |
| 404 | `agent_not_found` | pick an agent from `GET /v1/agents` (a deleted agent is the same as an unknown one) |
| 409 | `agent_disabled` | enable the agent in the dashboard |

Every call code, with its fix: [Errors → Calls](/platform-api/errors/#calls).

## Next

- [Run a campaign](/platform-api/campaigns/): the same agent calls a whole list.
- [Receive webhooks](/platform-api/events/): call events as they happen.
- [Send a text](/platform-api/sms/): start the carrier registration now, it
  takes weeks.
